Anton - Early Years in Hong Kong

Ni hao or Nei ho ma?

(Both of above = hello. The first in Mandarin Chinese, the second in Cantonese as spoken in Hong Kong).

Anton was born in Hong Kong in 1989, and spent his first few years living on the beautiful island of Lantau. This is a short ferry trip from Hong Kong itself, and we lived in Discovery Bay in an apartment near the beach on the South China Sea.

Anton went to Discovery Bay International School (DBIS), where he had friends from many nationalities and backgrounds, with some of whom he was able to keep in contact when he went back to the UK.

From a very early age he did a lot of travelling around Asia as well as to Australia. Fond memories we have of him include:

- Walking in the jungles around the Cameron Highlands of Malaysia, whilst he regularly threw up over his Dad's tasteless shirts;

- Being the lead announcer for a theatrical show in a holiday camp in Malaysia;

- Endless trips to various aquaparks;

- A failed camping trip in Hong Kong (we were asked to pack up and leave due to the hazard created by our campfire);

- Wobbling on his first 2-wheeler bike in Discovery Bay;

- Looking like a giant in front of model buildings in China (including miniature versions of Red Square and Kremlin in Moscow);

- Missing the coach during a trip in Australia;

- Doing a very impressive act as Spiderman on his birthday.

There were many other adventures, perhaps we will get around to writing a book about them: it will be roughly the size of the combined London Yellow Pages.

We would like to thank his friends from these years for giving him such a wonderful start in life. We are in debt to so many, but special thanks to Leonie and Doug, Sarita, Suzanna and Henry, Tania and Ian (not to mention Julia and Katia), Roz and Mike and Monica, Gosia and Andrew and all his teachers and friends at DBIS.
